Hackers Will Never Go Away, But We Can Frustrate Them with This Protocol

May 17, 2023

Every week, we read and hear about data breaches and cybersecurity threats on the news. As technology continues to evolve, so do the methods used by cybercriminals to steal personal information and gain access to secure systems. One of the most effective ways to protect against such threats is utilizing multi-factor authentication (MFA). MFA provides an additional layer of security beyond just a username and password, making it much harder for cybercriminals to access sensitive information.

What is MFA?

MFA is a security protocol that requires the user to provide multiple forms of identification to access a system or application. The most common form of MFA is the use of a username and password, along with a unique code that is sent to the user’s mobile device. This additional code is typically generated by an authentication app or sent via SMS. We sometimes get frustrated when we must go through this additional step.  By requiring two or more forms of identification, MFA significantly increases the security of a system, making it much more difficult for hackers to gain unauthorized access.

Statistics About MFA

The use of MFA is on the rise, and for good reason. A recent report by Microsoft found that enabling MFA can block up to 99.9% of account hacks. In addition, the report found that users who enable MFA are 99.9% less likely to be compromised than those who do not. These statistics highlight just how effective MFA can be in preventing unauthorized access.

Another statistic that demonstrates the effectiveness of MFA is the fact that over 80% of data breaches are caused by weak or stolen passwords. By requiring an additional form of identification, MFA helps to address this vulnerability and significantly reduces the risk of a data breach. Furthermore, research shows that MFA can reduce the risk of account takeover by up to 99.99%, which is a staggering statistic.

MFA and Remote Workers

MFA is becoming increasingly important as more and more people work remotely. With the rise of remote work, many organizations have had to shift their focus towards securing their remote networks and ensuring that employees are using secure devices and connections. MFA provides an additional layer of security for remote workers, helping to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive information.

The statistics speak for themselves when it comes to the importance of multi-factor authentication. By requiring two or more forms of identification, MFA significantly increases the security of a system, making it much more difficult for hackers to gain unauthorized access. As more and more organizations continue to adopt MFA, we can expect to see a significant reduction in data breaches and cyber-attacks. If you haven’t already enabled MFA on your accounts, now is the time to do so. If your business needs help with cybersecurity issues, let’s talk.
